Ok, I've been a very bad blogger an haven't updated since October last year! I have missed it but I promise I've had a good reason!
For the past 3 years it's been my aim to make my dream of being a professional opera singer a reality and in November I auditioned and was accepted at the RNCM in Manchester do their post graduate diploma in vocal/opera studies and performance. I previously applied seeral times but was put on reserve lists but I persevered and have finally made it. I've learnt that age old lesson of, if at first you don't succeed, try again! And again and again if necessary. You have to develop some serious self belief and believe me I've had to work my ass off at improving my technique. My plan of action these last 12 months was to do as much singing as humanly possible whilst keeping up the day job and so i auditioned for every possible role that came up in the area and I'm almost shocked to say, got pretty much everything I went for. Like so many other mezzos, my dream role will always be carmen and this year I've had the great honour of being cast twice on this role. I am currently touring with North Star Opera and will be singing the role at Buxton Fringe Festival in July for City of Manchester Opera an I'm having a fabulous time. The role sits so well in my, now 30yr old voice. It's
another dream come true.
Other roles I've performed include Flora in La Traviata last year for Opera 74, Diana in Orpheus in the Underworld for Preston Opera, and a small role in elixir of love, also for Preston Opera. What's even better is I got a great gig doing Dvoraks Requiem with macclesfield Oriana choir and Stockport symphony orch Which was wonderful to sing with other professionals and paid too. I also arranged a recital at Bolton pariah Church last month that went well. I already have bookings for next year on top of college so things are really taking off for me.
I'd like to thank my friends and family for their support and for being my biggest fans despite being slightly biased. I thank andy for supporting me despite hating opera as he has to put up with me not being around as I'm constantly rehearsing in any free time outside of work. My employers have been super understanding and when i go to college they are allowing me to develop my role in to more of a satalite role where I will be able to work remotely to fit in with my studies, on a self employed basis. Hopefully this will be greatly mutually beneficial. I want to thank Robert Alderson who has helped my transform my voice and get me to this level to enable me to now go to college and refine my voice to a true professional standard.
I feel lucky to have this opportunity to follow my dream. At the end of the day all we can do is work as hard as we can and hope we can make our dreams reality but if it doesn't go quite to plan I can say I tried with all my heart and soul. I love singing and communicating though song. If I can wake up in the mornings feeling that I'm doing the job I was put here on earth to do an feel that sense of satisfaction and appreciation I get from singing then I'll be the luckiest girl alive.
