Honey I Think We've Killed the Cat!

When we got in from manchester we settled down to an evening in front of the TV and tucked in to some more chocolate. Andy opened a bar of Cadburys Bourneville dark chocolate and when Chili came over to have a nosey at what he was eating he thought he'd give him a little taster. Admittedly he did ask me first as to if it was ok to give the cat a bit of his chocolate and I, kind of half listening, said yeah. Then I remembered... NOO! chocolate is poisonous for cats.

I immediately typed "Cats and Chocolate" in to google and my fears were confirmed! Hundreds of links popped up. Eeeek! We're bad cat parents!

Chocolate is indeed toxic for cats and the darker the more toxic and Bourneville is DARK. We immediately sprung in to action, I grabbed Chili and started frantically asking him if he was ok, he didn't reply... damn the not talking thing. We then set about working out how much he'd eaten. Andy said he'd given him a corner off 1 square of the chocolate. I looked up lethal doses and it said a single ounce of chocolate can be lethal to a 10-pound animal. So out came the scales... the cat was weighed, the chocolate was weighed and after much deliberation we came to the conclusion that at max he'd only had 0.017 oz and there for was pretty much safe. Looking back we must have made a pretty comical sight but we learnt an important lesson.

One thing is for sure, Chili will not be going anywhere near chocolate again for some time hehehe. That means that licking Ferrero Roches chocolates is now off his list of occasional treats!

If you've got a cat and didn't know chocolate was potentially leathal, here's a web site about it.

Chili is fine by the way though he was a little confused at all the commotion.
